Ahmed started his political career with the Congress party but later joined the Samajwadi Party (SP). He was elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Allahabad West constituency in 1985, 1989, and 1993 on an SP ticket. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1996 when he won the Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency on an SP ticket.

However, Ahmed was expelled from the SP in 1997 due to his alleged involvement in criminal activities. He then formed his own party called the Apna Dal and contested the 1998 Lok Sabha elections from Allahabad, but he lost. He joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 2004 and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Phulpur in 2004 and 2009, but he lost both times.

Ahmed has been involved in several criminal cases throughout his political career. He has been accused of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, kidnapping, and other crimes. He has spent several years in jail and has been acquitted in some cases, while others are still pending.

In February 2022, Atiq Ahmed was shot by unidentified gunmen in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. He was rushed to a hospital in Lucknow and underwent surgery. He survived the attack and is currently recovering.

The motive behind the attack is not clear, but there are speculations that it might be related to his criminal past and his alleged involvement in various criminal activities. The police are investigating the case, and no arrests have been made so far.
