The Kerala Files

What is the story of Kerala files

The Kerala Files is a book written by journalist and author Jijo J. John that exposes corruption and sexual abuse within the higher echelons of the Catholic Church in the Indian state of Kerala. The book is based on the author's investigation into the allegations made by a nun against Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar in Punjab.

In 2018, a nun from the Missionaries of Jesus congregation in Kerala accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of raping her multiple times between 2014 and 2016. The case gained national and international attention and sparked protests and calls for justice.

Jijo J. John, who was working as an investigative journalist at the time, began to look into the allegations and found evidence of a larger pattern of sexual abuse and corruption within the Catholic Church in Kerala. His investigation uncovered stories of priests and bishops who had committed sexual abuse and were being protected by the church hierarchy.

The Kerala Files documents the author's investigation into the allegations against Bishop Franco Mulakkal and the wider issue of sexual abuse and corruption within the Catholic Church in Kerala. The book also includes testimonies from victims of sexual abuse and interviews with whistle-blowers within the church.

The publication of The Kerala Files caused a major controversy in India, with the Catholic Church in Kerala accusing the author of spreading false allegations and attempting to tarnish the image of the church. However, the book has also been praised for its courage in exposing the truth and highlighting the need for change within the church.
